Françoise Vergès on the Museum of the Present

After years of debate, the government coalition recently confirmed that
the historic Berliner Schloss will be rebuilt on the demolished grounds
of the Palast der Republik.
As an architectural and urban development project, as well as the home
for the planned Humboldt-Forum – Germany’s latest expression of
reverence for the erudite Humboldt brothers and its version of the
universal museum – we consider the project to be highly problematic. The
entanglement of these two backward projects represents the apotheosis of
restorative historical policies and they are both grounded in an
under-problematized relationship to imperial and colonial histories. We
want to confront these undertakings this event grounded in a
postcolonial perspective that will formulate our critiques for the
German and wider European context.

To this aim, we have invited Françoise Vergès, a lecturer at Goldsmith
College at the University of London and political scientist,
postcolonial theorist and distin-guished chair of the committee for the
memory of slavery in France. Vergès has worked for many years on
questions of memory politics and their relationship to historical
violence and crimes and has proved herself to be a severe critic of
national (istic) memory politics that ignore critical questions of
exclusion, dominant perspec-tives and who has the right to speak.
Currently, she is co-developing in La Réunion, a French “département” in
the Indian Ocean, to develop a “museum of the present” that reflects the
unique history of the island, as a colonial transit-area and settlement
place.

Françoise Vergès will speak about this museum-in-progress, which shall
neither reify history nor tell narratives of origin, but create a place
for the struggles and controversies of contemporary society. Is such a
museum able to overcome the logic of national representation? What does
it mean to appropriate the concept of the museum in this context? How
can one build a museum that challenges conventional hierarchies between
visitors and display?

The working group artefakte is part of Alexandertechnik
(www.humboldtforum.info), a Network of social activists, artists and
academics, who reject the reconstruction of the castle as much as the
current concept of the Humboldt-Forum.

Soeben wurde der Neubau des Berliner Schlosses durch die neue
Regierungskoalition bestätigt. Wir halten dieses Vorhaben für verfehlt –
sowohl als architektonische und städtebauliche Rekonstruktion wie auch
als Gehäuse für das geplante Humboldt-Forum, das in Referenz auf die
gelehrten Gebrüder Humboldt als deutsche Version eines Universalmuseums
entstehen soll. Die Verschränkung dieser beiden (rückwärts-gewandten)
Projekte stellt eine restaurative Geschichtspolitik dar und gründet in
einem unterproblematisierten Verhältnis zu imperialen und kolonialen
historischen Projekten. Diesen Plänen möchten wir u.a. mit dieser
Veranstaltung entgegentreten, die unsere Kritik in einer postkolonialen
Perspektive für den deutschen und europäischen Kontext formulieren will.

Françoise Vergès ist Dozentin am Goldsmiths College der Universität
London, Politik-wissenschaftlerin, postkoloniale Theoretikerin und
mehrfach ausgezeichnete Vor-sitzende des Komitees für das Gedenken an
die Sklaverei in Frankreich. Sie ist seit Jahren mit Fragen der
Gedenkpolitik an historische Gewaltverbrechen befasst und zeigte sich
als eine scharfe Kritikerin staatlicher (Erinnerungs)politiken, die die
politisch relevanten Fragen nach Ausschluss, dominanten Perspektiven und
Rede-rechten ausklammern oder entschärfen. In La Réunion, einem
französischen Departement im indischen Ozean, ist sie Ko-Initiatorin
eines Museums der Gegenwart, das der spezifischen Geschichte dieser
Insel als kolonialem Transit- und Siedlungsgebiet entspricht. Mit dem
Museum sollen weder Ursprungserzählungen geschaffen, noch Geschichte
fixiert werden, vielmehr soll ein Ort entstehen, der Raum für die
Dynamiken und Kontroversen der heutigen Gesellschaft bietet. Kann ein
solches Projekt die Logik nationaler Repräsentation durchbrechen? Welche
Rolle spielt dabei die Aneignung des Konzepts Museum? Wie kann ein
Museum aussehen, das die Hierarchien zwischen Besucher_innen und
Ausstellung durchbricht?

Die Arbeitsgruppe artefakte ist Teil von Alexandertechnik
(www.humboldtforum.info), einem Netzwerk aus sozialen AktivistInnen,
KünstlerInnen und AkademikerInnen, die sowohl den Schlosswiederaufbau,
als auch das derzeit kursierende Konzept des Humboldt-Forums ablehnen.

Hoping to rally opposition to plans to rebuild Berlin’s historic city palace, a colourful protest with an inflatable castle and paper crowns took place in the German capital on Saturday. Read more here.

Thanks to TheLocal.de and the Berliner Kurier for sending down reporters and photographers to cover the demo. Every other press organization ignored our demonstration, despite being well-informed about it.

Strangely, the Berliner Morgenpost and other newspapers sent photographers to cover the construction of the Stadtschloss information center right next door to our demonstration, yet didn't bother to write a word or publish a photo about the jumping castle several meters away!

Kundgebung gegen das Stadtschloss
Samstag, 17. Oktober , 15.00 Uhr

Berliner BürgerInnen rufen die Verantwortlichen auf die Pläne für das falsche Stadtschloss im Zentrum der Stadt auzugeben, da es mehr als ein halbe Milliarde Euro kosten soll.
Am Samstag, den 17. Oktober wird sich eine Gruppe von Demonstranten auf dem Schlossplatz am Humboldt Forum versammeln.
Es wird eine farbenfrohe Kundgebung mit Musik und Hüpfburg zum Thema geben.
Das geplante Stadtschloss ist reine Geldverschwendung.
Besonders in Zeiten der Finanzkrise und wenn in Berlin andere wichtige, schon bestehenden Einrichtungen das Geld gekürzt wird und im baufälligen Zustand vor sich hin vegetieren.
Als Alternative soll der Schlossplatz in seinem jetzigen Zustand bleiben und als öffentliche Fläche oder Park genutzt werden.
Die Demonstranten nehmen das Scheitern des Architekturwettbewerbs für das geplante Stadtschloss zum Anlass, das Thema wieder neu ins öffentliche Bewusstsein zu bringen.
Nachdem das Projekt keinen Architekten hat, wird die Stadt Berlin aufgefordert ihre Agenda neu zu gestallten und sich erneuert die Fragen zu stellen, ob Berlin wirklich dieses Vorhaben tragen kann und will oder eben nicht.
Es gibt genügend bestehende Gebäude in der Stadt, in denen die möglichen Mieter öffentlicher Institutionen wie Bibliotheken, Universitätsfakultäten und Museen unterkommen können- und das bedeutend nachhaltiger und preisgünstiger.
Der Schlossplatz war seit langem ein Ort, an dem Symbole der Macht errichtet wurden. Nun will eine kleine, aber mächtige Gruppe von Geschäftsleuten ein weiteres Symbol der Macht dort errichten.
Schuß damit! Der Schlossplatz soll befreit werden von diesen Symbolen und einfach leer gelassen werden.
BürgerInnen und GegnerInnen des geplanten Stadtschlosses sind eingeladen am 17. Oktober um 15 Uhr sich am Schlossplatz einzufinden. Friedlich, mit Spaß und Freude kommt in königlichen Gewändern und Transpis und besetzt, nutzt und definiert als Volk euren Schlossplatz neu.

Demonstration against the Stadtschloss
Samstag October 17, 15.00

Berlin citizens will call on the authorities to abandon their plans to build a fake castle in the center of the city at a cost of more than half a billion euros.
On Saturday October 17, a group of demonstrators will gather at the Schlossplatz, the site of the proposed ‘Humboldt-Forum’.
They will hold a colourful demonstration featuring music and a jumping castle.
Their main message is that the Stadtschloss is an unnecessary waste of money, especially during a financial crisis, at a time when many other services in Berlin are under-funded and in a state of disrepair.
Instead, demonstrators propose that the Schlossplatz be left in its current empty state to be enjoyed as a public park.
Demonstrators have decided to act now due to the recently-exposed mishandling of the architectural competition. Now that the project is without an architect, it is a good time for the city to completely reconsider whether it wants or needs this building at all.
The public institutions that have been proposed as tenants of the Stadtschloss – including the city library, university faculties and museum departments – can accommodated in other existing buildings at a much lower cost.
The Schlossplatz has long been a site where symbols of power have been erected - first the power of the Prussian rulers, then the Socialist authorities. Now a small but powerful group of business people want to build yet another symbol of power there. Instead of this constant adjustment of history, demonstrators call for the location to be left empty and free of symbols.
Citizens who are also against the Stadtschloss can join the demonstration at the Schlossplatz at 15.00 on Saturday August 17. Organizers are inviting the public to bring their own signs, to dress as royalty, and to enjoy a playful, peaceful demonstration.

Join us at the Schlossplatz for a protest action against the Stadtschloss on Saturday October 17 at 3pm.

We will have a jumping castle on site for you to play on - because the only good castle is a jumping castle! We will also have DJs playing some nice electro-techno music.

Come dressed as kings, queens or nobility. Bring signs to demonstrate your disapproval.

Why demonstrate?

- Because the Stadtschloss is unnecessary: We already have enough unused buildings in Berlin, so there's no need to build more. The institutions, museums and libraries that may eventually be housed in the Stadtschloss can easily be accommodated elsewhere in the city for much less money.

- It is a waste of money: Currently it is budgeted at half a billion euros, but we all know that public projects always cost more than their budgets. This, at a time when Berlin can't even afford a properly working S-Bahn system!

- The decision making process is corrupted: The competition to decide the architect was found to be improperly conducted. See here.

- It is a symbol of imperial power: The Stadtschloss was originally the palace of the Prussian kings and a symbol of their imperial power. It was then destroyed and replaced by the Palast Der Republik, a symbol of Soviet power. Now, a group of rich and (mostly) west Germans want to resurrect the old symbol of power there. Instead of this constant replacing of power symbols, we want to see an empty park, free of symbols.

What should be build there instead?

Nothing! The Stadtschloss should remain how it currently is - a picturesque empty green space for the citizens of the city to enjoy.

What should be done with the money?

Lots can be done with half a billion euros: Berlin doesn't have a properly working S-Bahn system. Many of its citizens are unemployed due to the lack of sustainable industries here. There is an endless list of projects that could be funded with this money. We don't claim to advocate on behalf of any alternative project, but wish simply to say that spending money on an unnecessary castle in the middle of a financial crisis is a stupid idea.
